Sampsonia Way Magazine The Monks' Exodus

Last September, 15 exiled Burmese monks came from all over the United States to walk in a line through Pittsburgh streets. They started on the Northside, made their way past PNC Park, the Pirates’ baseball stadium, and ended up among downtown’s rows of skyscrapers. They chanted the sutra of loving kindness in front of curious passers-by. It was the G-20 summit and the monks and their supporters walked peacefully through throngs of uniforms of security forces. They hoped the march would ca… Continue

Sampsonia Way Magazine Burmese Media Revolution: Shouts for freedom from exile

Unable to catch his breath as the torturer pummelled his chest, Aung Thwin was becoming lightheaded. The interrogator asked him for the tenth time: “Do you work for Democratic Voice of Burma?” “No, I don’t,” Aung Thwin hoarsely repeated. Images of the interrogator flickered before his eyes, reminding him of 1990, when he was arrested and tortured until his blood-soaked shirt stuck to his body—the reason why his posture is altered to this day. Sampsonia Way Magazine Wendy Law-Yone: Banishment from certain states is a form of salvation

Wendy Law-Yone identifies herself as “half Burmese, a quarter Chinese, and a quarter English.” However, Burma, the country where she was born, is the common denominator of her three novels: The Coffin Tree (1983), Irrawaddy Tango (1993), and The Road to Wanting (2010). The daughter of a notable newspaper publisher who was imprisoned by the military regime during the sixties, Law-Yone was banished from her country and came to the United States in 1973, where she… Continue

Sampsonia Way Magazine From Burma to Brentwood: Refugees Create a Sense of Community in Pittsburgh

When Soe Naing’s youngest daughter Khin Mar Soe was born in 2001, he had “no dreams for her,” he recalled. She was born in a refugee camp in the Thailand-Burma border, one of an estimated 150,000 people living in nine camps after fleeing from the brutality of the Burmese government. The refugees inhabit a kind of political and economic no man’s land: they are unable to work, unable to move freely past the barbed wire fences that ring the camps, and—depending on the camp—unable to attend sc… Continue

Global Solutions Pittsburgh Repression in Burma: A Public Reading with Khet Mar

For those of you who may have missed it, Tuesday’s event with Khet Mar was a great success, with over 50 people piled into the Shadow Lounge. Khet Mar was kind enough to give us a reading from some of her works, along with a short history of the oppression in Burma. Just in case you haven't seen any of the promotion we did for the event, l

Tara Talerico America Recognizing Slavery

We could eradicate slavery. The laws are in place. The multi-nationals, the world trade organizations, the United Nations, they could end slavery, but they're not going to do it until and unless we demand it. -- Kevin Bales If you are at all interested in Human Rights then you surely have come across some sort of information to help fight Human Trafficking. The issue seems to be the hot topic for many human rights organizations and apparently for the United States of America. After ten years, U… Continue

Marissa Escajeda Hope for Children in Ethiopia

In the mist of all the terrible things going on around the world: starvation, murder, rape, child soldiering, domestic abuse, and modern day slavery, sometimes we lose sight of the positive and uplifting things individuals are doing all over the world. Today, I came across a news report by CNN on a women who started her own orphanage in Ethiopia.

Tim Lessick We Want the Airwaves: Music for Human Rights (Part 1)

There are a few things in my life that I can say I'm truly passionate about, two of which are pretty apparent if you know me. If you haven't had the pleasure, please, let me explain...

Music has been important to my life as long as I can remember. I've always been a music addict. Granted, my tastes have changed a fair amount over the years, but music nonetheless has been played a huge p

D. Bassett Gas Well Explosion in West Virginia

Now, for the second time within a week, we have a gas well explosion. The first one was in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, which last week had a blow out and spewed gas and untreated (read chemical and brine-filled) water into the air for 16 hours. Then, early this morning, yet another gas well exploded when a crew drilled through an abandoned coal mine near Moundsville, West Virginia (55 miles southwest of Pittsburgh), and hit a pocket of methane gas. The explosion sent flames 70 feet into the… Continue

D. Bassett Marcellus Shale Gas Drilling

I'm very concerned about the Marcellus Shale gas drilling that is going on in our area, not only because of the environmental problems that it produces, but because of the health problems that go along with it, for people and animals alike. Wherever shale gas drilling has been done across the United States (in 32 states, I believe), people have been reporting a variety of health problems, ranging from skin rashes and asthma to adrenal gland tumors, cancers and neuropathies. There have been probl… Continue
