In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to do a quick post highlighting what Pittsburgh is doing to transform itself into one of the countries top eco-cities.

An article in this month's Pittsburgh Magazine focuses on Pittsburgh's recent transformation:
“In terms of sustainability, Pittsburgh has come so far, whether it’s in innovation and research, environmental education, sustainable business
practices or our efforts to improve the viability of our water supply,”
says Greg Babe, president and CEO of Bayer Corp.
Anyone who has lived in the city for a long time will tell you about Pittsburgh's past - the smokey skies during the day, soot covered clothes, and the many steel mills that lined our rivers. Now, those same riverbanks are being revitalized and feature trails, parks, and development.

The Pittsburgh Port Authority has been working had to overhaul their fleet and have implemented positive changes long before regulated by law:

Over the last year, Port Authority has added 20 diesel-electric hybrid buses to its fleet,
bringing the total to 26. Two additional hybrids will join the fleet by
June 30, purchased in part with stimulus funds received via the
Allegheny County Health Department from the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act.

Whether hybrid or diesel-only, all Port Authority buses use a biodiesel fuel blend, and have since October 2009, although use of
biofuel will not be state-mandated until May 1, 2010. (via Port Authority)

Other companies in Pittsburgh are also taking the initiative to help minimize their impact on the Earth. PNC Bank, one of the cities largest companies, has become a trendsetter in green practices:

PNC has more newly constructed "green" buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council than any company on Earth.

PNC is the first U.S. bank to apply green building standards to all newly constructed or renovated retail
branch offices. (via PNC)

If you've been downtown, you may have seen the living wall from PNC. I took this picture when it was still winter, but now the wall is growing and green.

On a final green note, Global Solutions Pittsburgh is hosting their Spring Fundraiser on May 1st. Global Solutions is trying something new this year by holding their fundraiser on the world's first LEED-certified, green ship! The event is shaping up to be a new, innovative way for Global Solutions to raise awareness of water issues and enjoy a night on Pittsburgh's rivers.
